- Apr 1511:00 AMDealing with Burnout: The 7 Types of RestDo you ever feel like you're running on empty? Like no matter how much sleep you get or "down time," you still feel exhausted? That's because sleep is only one aspect of recovering from burnout. This workshop explores ways to tap into physical, mental, emotional, sensory, social, creative and spiritual rest as a way of holistically combatting the exhaustion and fatigue that comes with burnout. Learn how to recognize the signs of burnout, what a deficit in each rest tenet may look like and ways to restore balance. This workshop is part of the Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) Well-Being Online Workshop (WOW) series! [Learn about CAPS and other workshops.](https://caps.sswb.ucf.edu/)Virtual Location URL: https://ucf-hipaa.zoom.us/j/97245375228

- Apr 1512:00 PMAnthropology Lunch and Learn with Graduate studentsBring your lunch and join us to learn about the research graduate students are conducting! Please see the presentation abstracts below for more information:Jacob Woodard \- Jonathan Dickinson's Journal as an Ethnohistorical Resource for Insights into Florida Ethnobiology* Abstract: Jonathan Dickinson's Journal, a firsthand account of his 1696 shipwreck and journey through Florida, provides valuable ethnohistorical data on the region's plant and animal use. This talk examines the botanical and zoological references to reconstruct aspects of Indigenous resource utilization, environmental interactions, and subsistence strategies. By analyzing Dickinson's descriptions of flora, fauna, and survival practices, we gain information into the ethnobiological landscape of 17th-century Florida, and insights to colonial bias on ecological realities.Melissa Marks \- Sex Estimation Using Metric and Geometric Morphometric Analyses of the Adult Human Talus* Abstract: Estimating biological sex is an essential first step when analyzing human remains in both forensic and archaeological contexts. The talus is a promising alternative to traditional methods utilizing the pelvis or skull. The present study aims to refine metric and geometric morphometric methodologies of sex estimation utilizing ancient Egyptian, ancient Maya, and modern American tali. After preliminary analyses, side asymmetry was not identified based on the linear measurements or the GM data. Linear discriminant analysis achieved 64-71% accuracy. Set points achieved 71-78% accuracy. Canonical Variate Analysis achieved 57-100% accuracy in shape space, and 67-83% in form space. These preliminary results carry important implications for sex estimation of archaeological and modern populations based on the talus.Lydia Kiernicki - A Temporal and Spatial Analysis of Macrobotanical Remains Preservation at the Penny Site in Cape Canaveral, Florida* Abstract: Previous paleoethnobotanical analyses of microremains, starches and phytoliths at the Penny Site in Cape Canaveral, Florida have identified a variety of food plants, including greenbrier (Smilax sp.), maize (Zea mays), bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) and acorn (Quercus sp.). Using statistical analyses to identify spatial and temporal patterns of plant remains, I will further assess the distribution, preservation, and cultural use of plants at the site. This study will enhance our understanding of preservation of plant remains in coastal Florida contexts and of foodways that made up the subsistence practices of Indigenous populations that occupied Cape Canaveral.Virtual Location URL: https://ucf.zoom.us/j/96976159385?pwd=61qhoOkT1nXzKbKOYDlY1CnzPeorRL.1&from=addon

- Apr 154:30 PMCREOL Seminar: Chulmin Joo, Yonsei UniversityTitle: Computational microscopy for multi-dimensional and multi-contrast imagingAbstract: High-resolution, high-throughput imaging of large, multicellular biological structures remains a major challenge in microscopy. In this talk, I will introduce advanced multi-dimensional imaging platforms developed in our lab for 2.5D and 3D imaging of biological specimens. The first technology, the E2E-BPF microscope, enables large-area, high-resolution imaging of large-scale objects without the need for serial refocusing. This method integrates a physics-informed, deep learning-based design of a binary phase filter (BPF) with a deconvolution neural network, producing high-resolution, high-contrast images across extended depth ranges. Our prototype achieved a 15.5-fold increase in depth of field compared to conventional microscopes, demonstrating its high-resolution, high-throughput capabilities in imaging various cellular and tissue specimens.Next, I will present reference-free polarization-sensitive intensity diffraction tomography (PS-IDT), which reconstructs the 3D anisotropy distribution of multiple-scattering specimens. By illuminating a 3D anisotropic object with circularly polarized plane waves at different angles, we encode structural information into 2D intensity data. Using a vectorial multi-slice beam propagation model and a gradient descent method, we reconstruct detailed 3D anisotropy maps. PS-IDT's capabilities are demonstrated through imaging anisotropic materials such as potato starch granules and tardigrades. These imaging platforms hold significant potential for applications in rapid image-based diagnosis, optical vision, and metrology.About the Speaker: Dr. Chulmin Joo is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Yonsei University, Seoul, Republic of Korea. He obtained S.M. and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, in 2003 and 2008, respectively. Prior to joining Yonsei University, he worked as a lead engineer at GE Global Research, USA, involving and leading research programs for the development of various optical imaging and sensing devices. His primary research interests lie in the development and application of novel optical instrumentation and computational imaging technologies to address challenges and applications in diverse fields such as biology, medicine, optical metrology, and beyond. He strives to integrate fundamental understanding of optical imaging and computational technologies with the insights and needs from clinicians, biologists, and industry. He is a senior member of Optica (formerly Optical Society America), and has been a program committee member of Optica Imaging Systems and Applications since 2017. He served as the program and general chairs of Optica Imaging Systems and Applications (2020, 2021), and is serving as an Associate Editor of Adv. Imaging and Current Optics and Photonics. He is a member of Academic Editorial Board of PLoS One.
