Ethics and Emotion: Implications for the Professional Formation of Future Engineers Dr. Madeline Palmer • September 23, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. EasternThere is a growing recognition for the role of emotion in engineering education as it is embedded in students' responses to topics, experiences in the classroom, and interactions with peers. In tandem, emotion also relates to how people learn about ethics and engage in ethical design making. In this talk, Dr. Polmear will provide an overview of the intersection between emotion, ethics, and engineering education, including recent scholarship in this area and implications for the professional formation of future engineers.Dr. Madeline Palmer is a lecturer (assistant professor) in engineering education at King's College London. Her research relates to ethics, societal responsibility, and emotion in engineering education. She teaches introduction to engineering and design courses where she highlights sociotechnical integration in engineering. The UCF Recreation and Wellness Center, in collaboration with the University of Central Florida Officials Association, will be offering the 29th Annual Basketball Officiating Class. This class is designed to train officials in the proper rules and mechanics needed to officiate at the high school level and beyond. Qualified officials will teach it from the local high school associations, various college conferences and professional leagues, including the NBA.When: Class begins Tuesday, August 26, and takes place from 6:00-10:00 PM, and will continue every Tuesday until October 21.Class Format: Class will meet each night in the Recreation and Wellness Center, Room 206. Rules, discussion, and hands-on training will take place in each class. Instructors and guest speakers will provide feedback on how to improve through on-court and video-taped critiques. The RWC offers American Red Cross Adult CPR/AED, First Aid Blended Learning classes. The Blended Learning class includes an online portion (most participants can complete this in approximately 2 hours) and an instructor-led class skills session (approximately two hours long). The online portion must be completed prior to attending the in-class skills session.Each participant who successfully completes the course will earn an American Red Cross certificate in Adult First Aid, CPR with AED.
