- Jan 3111:00 AMCREOL Spring Colloquium: Su-Hyun Gong, Korea UniversityTitle: Light manipulation using multilayered transition metal dichalcogenidesAbstract: Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have emerged as a promising platform for photonic applications due to their strong light-exciton interactions. However, while TMD monolayers have been extensively studied, multilayered TMDs have received less attention due to their transition to an indirect bandgap. In this seminar, I will discuss the recent research advancements made by my group in the study of multilayered TMDs. We have found that bare TMD layers can naturally support guided exciton polaritons, owing to their strong excitonic resonances. This strong exciton-photon coupling offers high tunability and nonlinearity of the guided modes, making these materials particularly advantageous for nanophotonic applications. I will show several recent examples of nanophotonic applications that demonstrate the untapped potential of TMD layers in exploring new phenomena and applications in nanophotonics.Biography: Su-Hyun Gong is an associate professor in the department of Physics at Korea University. She received her PhD from the department of Physics at KAIST in 2015. Following her doctoral studies, she served as a postdoctoral fellow in Kobus Kuipers' group at AMOLF and TU Delft in the Netherlands. She joined Korea University in 2018. Her current research interest is nanophotonics using 2D semiconductor, especially valley-photon coupling in both weak and strong coupling regimes. - Feb 33:30 PMMathematics Colloquium by Dr. Brian MooreThe UCF [Mathematics Colloquium](https://sciences.ucf.edu/math/colloquium/), held every Monday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in MSB 318, offers a diverse platform for research scholars, faculty, students, and industry experts to share and exchange ideas, fostering discussion and networking across various areas of mathematics.[Brian Moore](https://sciences.ucf.edu/math/person/brian-moore/), Ph.D., (Department of Mathematics, UCF) will speak at this week's colloquium on time stepping with exact dissipation rates.Abstract: Many ODE and PDE models with damping and/or exernal driving forces have properties which describe energy, mass, momentum, etc. In particular, exponential integrators, which are generalizations of Runge-Kutta, discrete gradient, and collocation methods can be constructed to preserve these properties in numerical simulations under certain restrictions. As time-stepping schemes these methods have certain advantages for particular models, because they have dissipation rates that are exact, up to machine precision. Method construction, numerical stability, and applications, resulting primarily from undergraduate research projects at UCF, will be presented.
