Join us for a talk and Q&A with artist Wendy White. The event is free and open to the public.Wendy White Bio:Wendy White was the subject of a solo exhibition entitled Low Pressure at Museum Goch, Germany in 2021. Her work, spanning painting, sculpture, and installation, borrows its iconography from contemporary advertising, American pop culture, and twentieth-century art history. Through the juxtaposition of painterly abstraction, stenciled graphics, and hard-edge fabricated elements, White defies and expands the limitations of the traditional canvas. Her work was featured in Phaidon's anthology Vitamin P2: New Perspectives in Painting and has been reviewed in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Artforum, Art in America, New York Magazine, The Washington Post, The San Francisco Chronicle, Artnet, Time Out New York, Modern Painters, ArtNews and BOMB, among others.[Learn more information.](http://www.wendywhite.net)

- Nov 156:00 PMKent Speaker Series Presents: Angel's Trumpet: Ethnohistorical and Modern Accounts of Sacred Plant Use in EcuadorPlease join us for our Fall 2024 Kent Family Speaker Series guest lecture! Dr. Rachel Corr from Florida Atlantic University will be presenting on the Angel's Trumpet: Ethnohistorical and Modern Accounts of Sacred Plant Use in Ecuador. The event will be held in-person in Teaching Academy room 117 and via Zoom on Friday, Nov. 15 from 6- 7 p.m.[Join virtually here.](https://ucf.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_GfcX1Q6rSRu2QmjvncjE6Q)Abstract:Records of criminal and civil cases involving shamans in late colonial Ecuador reveal how sacred plants were used in past ritual settings and provide information about historical perceptions of human-plant-spirit relationships. The power of psychotropic plants, such as Angel's Trumpet (Brugmansia sp.), extends beyond their use in producing altered states of consciousness. Ethnohistorical testimonies detail the use of psychotropic plants and seeds for medicinal purposes and reveal beliefs in the sacred qualities of such plants. A plant-focused reading of ethnohistorical documents, compared with modern ethnographic practices, shows that Angel's Trumpet is, and has been, used for perceived spiritual protection and access to esoteric knowledge.Virtual Location URL: https://ucf.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_GfcX1Q6rSRu2QmjvncjE6Q Registration Link: https://ucf.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_GfcX1Q6rSRu2QmjvncjE6Q
