- Sep 2412:00 PMCREOL Seminar: Luciano De Sio, Sapienza University of RomeTitle: Disordered metastuctures: from liquid crystal plasmonics to pathogens sensingAbstract: Metasurfaces have played a crucial role in the past 10 years for their intrinsic capability to manipulate light, producing unpredictable opportunities in optics and photonics. However, despite this premise, metasurfaces have limitations such as limited working areas and need active tunability. To overcome these limitations, we explored a new generation of metastructures by selfassembling plasmonic nanoparticles [1] on different substrates. The high degree of disorder and optimum interparticle distance allow this new generation of metastructures to be used in multidisciplinary research fields, ranging from optics [2] to biotechnology. [3,4]In this presentation, I will introduce a new generation of optical components that can be used in active light filtering thanks to the powerful combination of nematic and cholesteric liquid crystals. Additionally, by functionalizing these metastructures with biorecognition elements like antibodies, we have successfully utilized them for efficient pathogen detection in potable water and environmental samples. [5, 6] Our findings pave the way for creating versatile devices that can be efficiently utilized in other fields, including solar energy and neurobiology.References: 1\. Guglielmelli, A. et al. - Sep 266:00 PMScribbles and Stories: Nurturing and Assessing Meaningful Writing in Early ChildhoodEarly writing is a critical part of emergent literacy, yet early childhood education often emphasizes transcription skills such as handwriting mechanics and spelling rather than meaning-making aspects of writing, such as composition. During this presentation, Dr. Margaret Quinn will focus on strategies for supporting and assessing young children's writing, specifically composing skills, highlighting the importance of fostering these skills at an early age. By providing meaningful writing opportunities, like those explored in this presentation, teachers can elevate children's writing abilities, build motivation and interest, and lay essential foundations for later literacy development. Attendees will gain insights into practical approaches that encourage children to write and foster a positive writing environment in the classroom.[Margaret F. - Sep 272:00 PMCREOL Colloquium: Mihai E. Vaida, University of Central FloridaTitle: Deciphering the mechanisms of surface photoinduced and photocatalytic reactions using femtosecond UV and XUV laser pulsesAbstract:The detection of highly unstable intermediate species during surface photoinduced and photocatalytic reactions and the correlation of their dynamics with the surface properties is crucial to fully understand and control heterogeneous reactions. In this work, an experimental methodology that combines surface mass spectrometry with a femtosecond pump-probe technique and ultraviolet multiphoton or extreme ultraviolet single photon ionization is employed to decipher the mechanisms of surface photoinduced and photocatalytic reactions. The technique relies on the detection of highly unstable intermediate species and final products with time-, mass-, and energy resolution. In the first part of the talk, the photoinduced reaction dynamics of methyl iodide adsorbed on an amorphous cerium oxide ultrathin film is investigated to understand the effect of random molecular adsorption geometries on the surface reaction. In the second part of the talk, an experiment is presented in which the ultrafast photodissociation dynamics of CH3Br molecules adsorbed on variable size Au clusters on MgO/Mo(100) is investigated by monitoring the CH3+ transient evolution. Extreme-ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy in combination with theoretical calculations are employed to study the electronic structure of the Au cluster on MgO/Mo(100). Changes in the ultrafast dynamics of CH3+ fragment are correlated with the electronic structure of Au as it evolves from monomers to small nonmetallic clusters to larger nanoparticles with a metallic character. In the last part to the talk, an experiment will be presented in which the photoinduced reaction of D2O in the presence of CH3I is monitored on an n-type (Nb) doped TiO2(100) surface. In this experiment intermediate species such as D, OD, and DO2 are detected when only water is dosed on the TiO2 (100) surface. When both D2O and CH3I are dosed on the surface, besides the intermediate species mention above, CH3 and I radicals as well as methane (CH3D) and methanol (CH3OD) are observed. Details about the surface properties and how this affects the surface chemical reactions will be provided.About the Speaker: Dr. Mihai E. Vaida is an associate professor in the Department of Physics and a member of the Renewable Energy and Chemical Transformation Cluster at the University of Central Florida (UCF). His research, which combines surface science and ultrafast spectroscopy, focuses on understanding the properties of catalytic and photocatalytic materials as well as surface reaction mechanisms. Prior to joining UCF, he earned a doctoral degree in physical chemistry from the University of Ulm, Germany and was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley. He received several awards including NSF Career award, UCF Research Incentive Award, UCF COS Excellence in Research Award, DAAD Scholarship (German Academic Exchange Program), Erasmus and Erasmus Plus Scholarships, and EMSPS (European Mobility Scheme for Physics Students) Scholarship.Virtual Location URL: https://ucf.zoom.us/j/91965880588?from=addon

- Oct 33:00 PMCHDR Presents: Amit BaishyaJoin Dr. Amit Baishya from the University of Oklahoma as she speaks about new critical studies on South Asian Horror and Anthropocene in her talk: Indian National Weird: The Aesthetics of Air as Horror in New Literary Narratives. This talk considers new theoretical categories in the "aesthetics of the weird" and their double valence of the terns, "atmosphere" and "weird" in emerging South Asian literature. I will be focusing on the aesthetics of the weird, a post-Lovecraftian generic descriptor that merges horror, science-fiction and speculation, to depict the vicissitudes of the Anthropocene emerging literary narratives such as Siddhartha Deb's new work The Light at the End of the World. In the era of Anthropocene, the "atmosphere" has become "weird" and in a different sense as a novel on the Anthropocene, the atmosphere that the characters inhabit is literally weird because of anthropogenic impacts such as air pollution. This latter aspect is especially germane in the representation of New Delhi, which is routinely listed as a city with poor air quality. In this talk, I focus exclusively on the Delhi segments of this sprawling heterotemporal and multiscalar novel. Zooming in especially on atmospheric pollution and it's differentiated impacts on the city's populations, the creation of insulated and exclusionary "bubbles" (Peter Slotedijk) through technologies like air conditioning, and the mediated representation of air through techno-visualizations like the Air Quality Index (AQI), my talk traces the double valence of weird atmospheres, and argues that the 'weird' may be one of the most powerful generic modes to depict how elemental substances like air are changed, changed utterly in the epoch of the Anthropocene.CHDR Presents is an ongoing talk series hosted by the Center for Humanities and Digital Research (CHDR) where scholars share innovative, award-winning, creative research to both showcase their work and foster collaboration. This event is supported by the UCF India Center and the Department of English.
