- Nov 121:00 PMTo Patent or Not To Patent? In engineering innovation and entrepreneurship, deciding whether to patent an invention requires balancing alternatives like trade secrets against key business considerations. This startup skills workshop overviews patenting versus trade secret pros and cons.Key issues:1. Trade Secrets vs. Patents: When to protect inventions secretly (e.g., Coca-Cola's formula) over patents, assessing reverse-engineering risks, enforcement and non-compete clauses that may restrict disclosure or mobility.2. Non-Compete Agreements: Identifying/negotiating covenants in contracts to avoid startup barriers, tying into IP choices like trade secrets that preserve flexibility without public disclosure.3. Startup Patent Strategies: Balancing high costs, timelines and risks -- including invalidity challenges in district court and the Patent Office -- through provisional filings and targeted IP portfolios to enhance investor valuation while minimizing exposure.Registration Link: https://ucf.startuptree.co/event/s/C8VSsnHA8E2gxTjLdUFsFB/To-Patent-or-Not-To-Patent%253F-

- Nov 1310:30 AMMathematics Colloquium by Dr. Suzanne Lenhart, University of Tennessee, KnoxvilleOur [colloquium](https://sciences.ucf.edu/math/colloquium/) series offers a diverse platform for research scholars, faculty, students, and industry experts to share and exchange ideas, fostering discussion and networking across mathematics, statistics, and data science.Professor [Suzanne Lenhart](https://web.math.utk.edu/~slenhart/) from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, will speak at this week's colloquium on Natural System Management: Modeling Examples.Abstract: Specific management features can be included directly into the model framework, and outcomes can suggest the need for external actions on the natural system. Models with discrete and continuous time steps, and some spatial features, will be presented. In one example, optimal control techniques to design time-varying harvest rates of anchovy stock will be illustrated in a food chain system of differential equations for the Turkish coast of the Black Sea, using landing data. In another example, we find the relationship between air temperature and emergence success of hatchlings across multiple nesting seasons to better understand the potential impact of climate change on Loggerhead sea turtle populations. We demonstrate the effect of changing hatchling emergence success on the juvenile and adult populations using a combination of a statistical model and a discrete time model (with two time scales).Speaker Bio: Dr. Suzanne Lenhart is a Chancellor's professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She was a part-time research staff member at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for 22 years. Dr. Lenhart was president of the Association for Women in Mathematics from 2001 to 2003, and is a fellow of SIAM, AMS, AWM and AAAS. She also served as the associate director for education and outreach of the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis for 12 years.
