- Nov 121:00 PMTo Patent or Not To Patent? In engineering innovation and entrepreneurship, deciding whether to patent an invention requires balancing alternatives like trade secrets against key business considerations. This startup skills workshop overviews patenting versus trade secret pros and cons.Key issues:1. Trade Secrets vs. Patents: When to protect inventions secretly (e.g., Coca-Cola's formula) over patents, assessing reverse-engineering risks, enforcement and non-compete clauses that may restrict disclosure or mobility.2. Non-Compete Agreements: Identifying/negotiating covenants in contracts to avoid startup barriers, tying into IP choices like trade secrets that preserve flexibility without public disclosure.3. Startup Patent Strategies: Balancing high costs, timelines and risks -- including invalidity challenges in district court and the Patent Office -- through provisional filings and targeted IP portfolios to enhance investor valuation while minimizing exposure.Registration Link: https://ucf.startuptree.co/event/s/C8VSsnHA8E2gxTjLdUFsFB/To-Patent-or-Not-To-Patent%253F-

- Nov 1310:30 AMMathematics Colloquium by Dr. Suzanne Lenhart, University of Tennessee, KnoxvilleOur [colloquium](https://sciences.ucf.edu/math/colloquium/) series offers a diverse platform for research scholars, faculty, students, and industry experts to share and exchange ideas, fostering discussion and networking across mathematics, statistics, and data science.Professor [Suzanne Lenhart](https://web.math.utk.edu/~slenhart/) from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, will speak at this week's colloquium on Natural System Management: Modeling Examples.Abstract: Specific management features can be included directly into the model framework, and outcomes can suggest the need for external actions on the natural system. Models with discrete and continuous time steps, and some spatial features, will be presented. In one example, optimal control techniques to design time-varying harvest rates of anchovy stock will be illustrated in a food chain system of differential equations for the Turkish coast of the Black Sea, using landing data. In another example, we find the relationship between air temperature and emergence success of hatchlings across multiple nesting seasons to better understand the potential impact of climate change on Loggerhead sea turtle populations. We demonstrate the effect of changing hatchling emergence success on the juvenile and adult populations using a combination of a statistical model and a discrete time model (with two time scales).Speaker Bio: Dr. Suzanne Lenhart is a Chancellor's professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She was a part-time research staff member at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for 22 years. Dr. Lenhart was president of the Association for Women in Mathematics from 2001 to 2003, and is a fellow of SIAM, AMS, AWM and AAAS. She also served as the associate director for education and outreach of the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis for 12 years.

- Nov 1411:00 AMCREOL Fall Colloquium: Jelena Vuckovic, Stanford UniversityTitle: Inverse Designed, Densely Integrated Classical and Quantum PhotonicsAbstract: Recent breakthroughs in photonics design, along with new nanofabrication approaches and heterogeneous integration, play crucial roles in building photonics for applications including optical interconnects and quantum technologies. This design breakthrough, called photonic inverse design, involves efficiently searching through the space of all possible photonic device geometries, considering fabrication constraints, and using fast electromagnetic solvers and optimization tools. Additionally, new photonic platforms have been developed, enabling functionalities beyond silicon on insulator. These include silicon carbide, diamond, and Titanium: sapphire on insulator, as well as ultra-strong electro-optic materials, such as strontium and barium titanate. With these new approaches to design and fabrication, novel optoelectronic devices and systems have been designed and demonstrated, including error-free and fast chip-to-chip and on-chip optical interconnects compatible with commercial foundries, chip scale Ti: sapphire lasers and amplifiers, CMOS-compatible isolators and laser frequency stabilizers, and silicon carbide and diamond chip-scale quantum technologiesAbout the Speaker: Jelena Vuckovic (PhD Caltech 2002) is the Jensen Huang Professor of Global Leadership, Professor of Electrical Engineering and, by courtesy, of Applied Physics at Stanford. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and an external scientific member of the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics. Her honors include the Zeiss Award, Vannevar Bush Faculty Fellowship, Geoffrey Frew Fellowship from the Australian Academy of Sciences, the IET A. F. Harvey Engineering Research Prize, Mildred Dresselhaus Lectureship from MIT, and the Humboldt Prize. She is a fellow of the APS, Optica and IEEE. Vuckovic is a co-founder and a lead scientific advisor of SPINS Photonics and a lead editor of Physical Review Applied.Virtual Location URL: https://ucf.zoom.us/j/97575154727?from=addon

- Nov 192:00 PMEmerging and Re-emerging Viral Pathogens in BrazilThe recent resurgence of arboviruses such as Chikungunya (CHIKV), Zika (ZIKV), Yellow Fever (YFV), and dengue (DENV), along with the emergence of SARS-CoV-2, has placed considerable strain on healthcare systems worldwide, including in Brazil. The distribution of these viral pathogens is shaped by a complex interplay of demographic, environmental, and social factors, often leading to outbreaks in regions previously unaffected. Brazil, with its diverse ecosystems and urban expansion, remains particularly vulnerable to such re-emergences, underscoring the need for enhanced surveillance and response strategies. Integrating genomic diagnostics with digital disease surveillance offers a powerful framework for global pathogen monitoring. Real-time sequencing and bioinformatics, combined with epidemiological data, provide critical insights into how viruses spread and evolve, enabling timely and effective public health responses across regions.Talk by: Eleonora Cella, PhD, MSc Assistant Research Scientist
