- Mar 2910:30 AMMathematics and Applications Seminar by Dr. Abey Lopez GarciaThe UCF [Mathematics and Applications Seminar](https://sciences.ucf.edu/math/ucf_section/mathematics-and-applications-seminar/), which takes place every Friday from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in MSB 318, provides a venue for researchers to present their current work, foster new collaborations, and showcase both foundational mathematics and its applications to graduate and undergraduate students.Dr. [Abey Lopez-Garcia](https://sciences.ucf.edu/math/person/abey-lopez-garcia/) will be speaking at this seminar about asymptotic properties of greedy energy sequences.Abstract: In this talk I will discuss asymptotic properties of greedy energy sequences on compact subsets of a Euclidean space, with special emphasis in the case of the unit circle in the plane. Such infinite sequences are constructed by a greedy algorithm, in which the discrete potential generated by the first n points of the sequence is minimized at the (n+1)-st point, for each index n. The study of the asymptotic properties of such sequences was initiated by the Polish school of F. Leja in the 1950s and in the context of Newtonian potentials. In recent decades they have attracted an increasing interest due to several reasons: the relatively low cost for their construction, their good distribution properties and their nearly optimal properties in interpolation and energy minimization problems. In this talk I will mainly focus on the asymptotic properties of the optimal values of potentials generated by these sequences on the unit circle in the case of the logarithmic and Riesz potentials, describing some recent results obtained with E. Miña-Diaz.
- Mar 2911:00 AM2024 Enhancing Lives Showcase: Meet the MakersUCF's researchers don't just produce research papers, posters and conference presentations, they also write poetry and stories, draw, paint, build, film, design, code, sew, shape and more! The first annual Creative Scholarship Showcase will highlight some of the creative scholarship, artistic pieces and new production of UCF students from a variety of disciplines.Meet the Makers and MentorsCome and meet the artists at the Morgridge International Reading Center! This event will feature a brief introduction. Then each student will stand by their piece and discuss their creation with the members of the audience as they come by.
- Mar 2911:00 AMCREOL Colloquium: Dr. Andrea Alu, City University of New YorkTitle: Extreme Light Control with MetamaterialsAbstract: The field of metamaterials, artificial engineered materials, has been rapidly evolving in the past two decades, demonstrating extreme optical phenomena and unprecedented control over wave propagation. In this talk, I discuss recent developments in this field of research, with an emphasis on the role of symmetries in establishing emerging optical responses for metamaterials based on otherwise simple constituents. Geometrical rotations, suitably tailored perturbations, and broken time reversal symmetry can be carefully engaged to tailor waves in robust and efficient ways, control their propagation, break Lorentz reciprocity, and enable topological order and phase transitions. In particular, the use of strongly coupled light and matter interactions in polaritonic systems enables extreme responses at the nanoscale, well suited for classical-wave and quantum applications. In my talk, I will discuss the underlying physical principles that span over a wide range of frequencies, and their impact on practical technologies, from imaging, energy and sensing to computing and communications.About the Speaker: Andrea Alu is a Distinguished Professor at the City University of New York (CUNY), the Founding Director of the Photonics Initiative at the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center, and the Einstein Professor of Physics at the CUNY Graduate Center. He received his Laurea (2001) and PhD (2007) from the University of Roma Tre, Italy, and, after a postdoc at the University of Pennsylvania, he joined the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin in 2009, where he was the Temple Foundation Endowed Professor until Jan. 2018. Dr. Alu is a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the Materials Research Society (MRS), Optica, the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE) and the American Physical Society (APS). He is a Highly Cited Researcher since 2017, a Simons Investigator in Physics, the director of the Simons Collaboration on Extreme Wave Phenomena Based on Symmetries, and the Editor in Chief of Optical Materials Express. He has received several scientific awards, including the NSF Alan T. Waterman award, the Blavatnik National Award for Physical Sciences and Engineering, the IEEE Kiyo Tomiyasu Award, the ICO Prize in Optics, the OSA Adolph Lomb Medal, and the URSI Issac Koga Gold Medal.Virtual Location URL: https://ucf.zoom.us/j/93282801728?from=addon

PLAY BALL events have become MLB's signature youth engagement activity during the professional and amateur baseball and softball calendar, especially on key dates throughout MLB's Championship Season and through the World Series. PLAY BALL events demonstrate the positive way the game can serve as an outlet for physical activity, fun with friends and learning how to play the sport at its most basic levels. PLAY BALL also serves as the League's youth umbrella in which all associated programs and events derive from the initiative's consistent, simple message: However You Play Ball, PLAY BALL! PlayBall.org is the PLAY BALL initiative's online home and is accessible via MLB.com, USABaseball.com, USASoftball.com and other partner websites. Please download the event flyer, [here](https://global.ucf.edu/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/PR-Baseball-Day-2024-1.pdf)Registration for the event is REQUIRED, [here](http://TINYURL.COM/PRRH-BASEBALL-DAY-2024).
