- All dayBiology Summer InstituteThe Biology Summer Institute is a one-week program for rising junior and senior high school students interested in seeking further understanding of Central Florida's diverse ecosystems, from Orlando to the east coast. This program will introduce students to field techniques and experimental approaches used in water quality assessment, vegetation monitoring, forest ecology, and studies of gopher tortoises and marine turtles. Throughout the program, students will participate in hands-on experiences with professional biologists in a fun and educational setting designed to inspire a passion for studying the fields of biology, ecology and natural resource conservation. In addition, students will spend one day in the lab learning basic data analysis and the importance of communicating science. This course primarily focuses on topics of mindset, preparation and safety awareness, but also utilizes defensive tactics instructors, certified by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to demonstrate basic physical defense techniques. Our courses are designed to provide attendees with information, tactics and options which we believe may be useful for various types of crimes perpetrated against victims.As an inclusive, public institution of higher education, UCF offers the Mighty Knights classes to all students, staff and faculty within the UCF community at no cost. A valid UCF affiliated e-mail account must be used when registering for this course.Registration is required. Please note, class sizes are small to ensure each participant is able to get the most from the class, so there is a limited amount of space available.
